I have followed the thread about the discontinuance of passenger trains 35-36 (1954) on the Durham line and the numbering of replacement mixed trains as 71-72. The mixed trains were last listed in the June 1957 timetable. With the demise of 71-72 the October 1957 timetable has the notation that N&W tickets would be honored by Virginia Stage Lines and checked baggage would be handled in an box express car. However the bus made stops in fewer than half the towns on the line.

By looking at earlier timetables in my collection I found that N&W tickets would be honored by Virginia Trailways bus between Lynchburg and Durham. This notation from 1955 and 1957 timetables also reads: "Durham District trains 71 and 72 operate between Durham 12th Street Station and Durham (Duke Yard). Passengers, if any, will be handled between Durham Freight Station and Duke and between Twelfth Street Station and Lynchburg Union Station by taxicab."

 Larry,

We are dealing with two "discontinuances" here. First is the date of discontinuance of regular passenger service on the Durham line and the second is the date of discontinuance of the replacement mixed train service. Apparently the arrangement with the Virginia Stage Lines replaced the latter service. I have an October 1960 Official Guide that has a note that reads essentially the same as the one you cite from the June 1958 TT. This indicates that the arrangement with Virginia Stage Lines lasted at least 28 months. I hope someone can still come up with the precise dates of the above service changes.
