Gordon

I may have narrowed it down a bit more on the passenger service discontinuance.

My N&W public timetable collection is fairly decent, Timetable No. 2 dated April 28, 1957 still shows the mixed trains in effect.

The next issue, No. 3, June 30, 1957, still shows the listing, but it has been rubber stamped over top with “Schedule Changes have been made since this folder was issued. Consult ticket agent for information.

The next issue, No. 4, October 27, 1957 shows freight service only.

First is the date of discontinuance of regular passenger service on the Durham line and the second is the date of discontinuance of the replacement mixed train service. Apparently the arrangement with the Virginia Stage Lines replaced the latter service. I have an October 1960 Official Guide that has a note that reads essentially the same as the one you cite from the June 1958 TT. This indicates that the arrangement with Virginia Stage Lines lasted at least 28 months. I hope someone can still come up with the precise dates of the above service changes.

Baggage may be checked from and to these points and will be handled by Box Express Car on a tri-weekly basis leaving Lynchburg on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays and leaving Durham on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays”.

Likewise, that it notes arrangements for passengers and baggage ticketed via N&W to be handled by bus and express car also suggests recent discontinuance as protection for tickets issued before discontinuance was authorized.
