I have a copy of the diagram books and obviously I missed that change notation.  I believe that when the Evans auto loaders were stripped, they left the chain tubes in the floor as this would have required a major rebuild of the car.

My apologies, those cars were reclassified as BX-1 after the auto loaders were removed.

I was working on cleaning up a Virginian diagram book from 1955 to have the society offer for sale, which is where the BX-1 page came from:
