Jason… Most interesting note! Living in Woodstock, IL, my wife and I have visited IRM many times. We also had an opportunity to ride in the dog house and enjoyed it very much. Looking forward over the coal, we could watch the fireman shoveling the coal into the firebox. We of course had the engineer’s permission to ride up there, but upon our return to the station, the woman in charge that day was more than a bit upset due to liability concerns.

I have ridden in the dog house on the Tender of Frisco 1630 at IRM. It is actually a very cool place to go for a ride. It would have had steam heat, windows that close and a light. It was probably more comfortable than the cab in some ways.

Thank you for the explanation! That really must have been an awful place to have to sit. "Hellish" might be an appropriate adjective.

Technically, they were known as “brakeman’s cupola” but the obvious “doghouse” nickname carries on.
They were for the headend brakeman to ride and be able to watch over the train easier, than looking back out of the cab of the locomotive.
Remember this was in the days before dynamic braking and roller bearings, hence the need to watch for a hotbox or sticking brakes more.
