I Haven’t seen that video; I’ve heard about it. I find it hard to believe, knowing the running gear of the engine, that the illustrated failure was initiated by a failure of the crosshead or guide.

I witnessed the reslts of a failure of a Y-6 back In 1956. The failure was caused by improper operation of the locomotive resulting in the right main crankpin of the LP engine coming out of the wheel. There was considerable damage on the left side of the engine (the feedwater heater was nearly knocked off the engine by breaking side rods) but they didn’t cause the failure.

There were only two As with the mismatched front engines – the 1205 and the 1213. There may have been other front engine swaps on As, but those were the only two mismatched.

Roger, If it helps . . . I don’t believe the incident shown in the video (very interesting scene indeed) has any bearing on the front engine swap between the 1205 and the 1213. John Garner

Ed,

Then there must have been 2 A's with the mis-matched crosshead swap as I have a video of an A and the photographer actually captured it dropping. Left side. The A was passing another train (Z-1?) switching when it dropped. I think it was the video by Main Line Motion Pictures. This wasn't a roll over. Without going back and looking at the video I think it may have been 1209 or 1210. It must have been one of the first series of engines as it was a multiple bearing type. The video shows lots of straw hat folks and shop men taking down the left side to get her to the shop.

Subject: Questions

I was wondering about some N&W steamer stuff and want to see if anyone knows the answers.

Did all J's receive doghouses near the end?

Several Js received doghouses near the end. I don’t know if they all got them, but Bud might.

Did any K-2's get doghouses?

Never saw any photos of K-2s with them, but again Bud might have this information.

What 2 A's swapped front engine assemblies when the one dropped the crosshead guide?

How long did they run this way?

The 1205 turned over at Chattaroy with #86 and landed on its side in US 52 (a photo of it is in my A book). It had the multiple bearing guides. It was taken into Portsmouth shop and repaired and to expedite its return to service it got the front engine of the 1213 (Alligator crosshead guides) which was being overhauled. When the 1213 was outshoppe it had 1205’s front dngine. I have photos of both in the book. They kept the mismatched front engines until the end. Neither “dropped a crosshead guide”. The heavy guide yoke kept the bottom guide of the Alligator assembly from dropping and the multiple-bearing guide was equally secure.
