Fw: N&W No. 9 mail service on the Bristol Line

Glenn Fisher at Cornwall, PA asked: "In the 1950s N&W No 9 on the Bristol line carried a Baggage Mail car. Was the mail section a working RPO and what was its size?"
The RPO apartment assigned to trains 9 and 10 was 15 feet and had either one or two clerks on duty performing mail distribution primarily for post office dispatches and receipts between Roanoke and Bristol. The remaining 45 feet of the car was either allocated to Railway Express or to storage mail. These RPO trains were short-runs of WASHINGTON & BRISTOL RPO. A schedule table, space authorizations, and mail worked listing are attached, circa 1950. Please note that there was a substantial amount of storage mail carried by trains 9 and 10 of varying frequencies. If questions arise about the specific frequency notes shown, please send an email off-list and I will provide several pages defining each note.
