Subject: Fwd: 2 Franklin & Pittsylvania RR - Pigg River trip

      Franklin & Pittsylvania RR March/April 2020

One recent trip along the right-of-way of the F&P RR took us to one of the most remote locations along the line. It was October 15, 2019 and a clear day with temperatures in the low seventies. The section we explored that day was where the train ran along the east side of Pigg River and Potter Creek in Pittsylvania County. It followed both for a total of about a mile and a half. Walking the grade was easy as it was flat with just a few breaks for drainage off the steep hill adjacent to the line. Accessing each end of the ROW wasn't as easy and required crossing Potter Creek and dealing with some steep hills. On hand to explore that day were Johnny Fuller, Bobby Hedrick and myself. Follow our walk on the attached newsletter.

The museum in Rocky Mount has a copy of our new map book in their reference section. It is a handy guide to study or find where the rails of the old F&P Railroad actually ran. Starting in Rocky Mount it follows the rails to the point it joined the tracks of the Southern Railway at Pittsville. For a short time those desiring a copy can order it from Linda Stanley at the museum. The book is about fifty pages in full color showing maps and photos of actual locations along the route where the rails ran.
