Virginian PA locomotive speed

I understand that the New York Central #999 speed record was westbound between Batavia to Buffalo, NY. It was May 10th, 1893.

I may be wrong but the 999 ran on the NYC&HR and not the New Haven.

While we are on the subject of engines making top speeds, I would like to offer up two documents.  

 

The first document is a mechanical engineer's assessment of the claims made for NYNH&H Eng 999 in 1892. 

 

The second document addresses the question,  What was the first engine to run over SIXTY miles an hour?  It is a charming little article, quite tolerant of the patina which frequent repetition lends to well-told tales.  The Mr. Minot named is none other than Charles Minot, renowned for his association with the **first train order** about three years after Eng ANTELOPE skedaddled across Massachusetts in 1848. 

 

The text in the files contains some strange looking two-letter combinations.  Those are there because this text has been prepared to run auto-text-transmit on our Internet Telegraph Wire, and we make our punctuations in Morse by use of these two-letter combinations.  Really, they should not give you any trouble at all.
