I'll hope along with you that the errant driver has to pay.  Formerly lived in NJ.In city of Cherry Hill, years ago, misguided truck driver hit support structure ofpedestrian bridge across State Highway 38.  Bridge was damaged beyond repair. For unknown reasons, State did not go after driver / company for damages.Bridge was not replaced, causing difficulty for people trying to get to Cherry Hill Mall ( one of the early enclosed shopping centers ).

Who owns that bridge?  If the city does, they may use this excuse to demolish it.

One would hope that the driver who hit the bridge (and/or his insurance company) is pressed for the cost of repairs to keep the bridge in place and in use.
What is the status of the section foreman's house at the other end of the bridge? At one time a few years ago, it was a bed and breakfast that was available to be booked for a stay in town.
