Photo location question

I gleaned this off ebay over the past year or two but didn't notice the 2nd
engine cut in 5 cars back.  I think the signal number is 2544 but have not
looked at timetables to determine location.

 

Why would the 2nd engine be there and not directly behind the lead?  Where
was this taken?
