. BTW: ACL installed ATC on the Petersburg to Richmond line, so N&W engines that ran the Richmond connections had to have ATC equipment, which was not the same system as that on the Shenandoah.
Jim Nichols
The signal system on the ACL Petersburg-Richmond was manufactured by General RailwaySignal. Engines 121-122-123 were equipped with the GRS equipment. ACL crews staffedthe so-called "Short Runs", and N&W crews were assigned only to Nos. 21-22, As I recall,GP-9 No. 503 also was fitted with the GRS system. ATC was still active on the ACL into the1960s, allowing their EMD's (a.k.a. "Flying Purple People - Eaters) a maximum speed of 90 MPH. Harry Bundy
