I had a neighbor who came up from VA to Ohio be a dispatcher on the PRR.
He lasted about one summer as he so missed working in the coal mines. He
knew it was dangerous working in a mine with real health consequences,
but he said he was addicted to it.

As our society grows in numbers and matures, we have to look at the
results of our and business' actions. Coal gives us energy, but ruins so
much of nature and human health. If we put those costs into the balance
sheet of a coal producer (in terms of clean up and medical cost) then
the bottom line would look much different to the shareholders. Could
mining go forward. who knows?
