My aunt Andrea was a conductor and later an engineer on UP, mostly running
unit trains of coal across Missouri to a power plant in Illinois. She never
hit a car but she knew several coworkers who had. Andrea said that in some
cases the men were never the same after the accidents. Even though the
crashes were the fault of the car drivers ignoring the warning signs and
gates at the road crossings and the engineers were held blameless, they were
still haunted by a sense of guilt and by the sight of the accidents. It's an
awful situation.
