Big Spring current image

Might be that locals refer to the entire watershed as the ‘spring’. It’s only about a half mile long from source to Roanoke River. It appears that watercress has pretty well spread the entire length of it (passing under Rt. 11/460). Now I’m intrigued about the other slightly larger body of water that Ray mentioned whose source is between the highway and the tracks and about a quarter mile west of Big Spring. Curious if that is spring fed also. John Garner

Thanks, John although I now feel the need to return to Elliston and shoot the origin of the spring.
Also, it puzzles me as to why Mr. Thompson failed to mention the source of his pond which is located on the other side of Lee Highway.

Yes, nice work Mike.
Mr. Thompson is standing about a quarter mile downstream from the spring itself. Here is a google, road-side view of the spring. <https://goo.gl/maps/KexCpS6d8QzvUbiC7> https://goo.gl/maps/KexCpS6d8QzvUbiC7
You can see some of the stone retaining wall that’s shown in the postcard.

We stoped in Elliston this afternoon and
met Jim Thompson who owns Big Spring and was knowledgeable about the watercress going to market. He was gracious enough to let me take his picture. Also, I went about 500 feet north and shot where a local road crosses the tracks and a small building with a “salvaged” Train Station sign.
A small bridge over a creek should nail down the location for any trainmen that traversed this route.
