Though fusable plugs were not perfect they were better than an explosion.
Most failures were do to problems with injectors. One of the most
spectacular explosions, to a C&O H8, was probably caused by injector
failure, resulting in the boiler travelling hundreds of yards down the line
and the cab ending up on an island in the New River.
