Richlands coaling tower?

This is more likely 41 since it is taking on water which was usually done at Vicker. The distance from Lynchburg to Bristol was 209 miles and often the joint Sou/N&W trains between these points took on water for that long run since the 600s most of the time were not changed at Roanoke.

Jim and John: I think you have figured this out. I agree this is No. 41. At the time of this photo in the early 1950s, No. 41 carried five or so Pullman’s and a diner as well as several coaches through Vicker and many of the head end cars found on No. 41 is the late 1950s and 60s were on the local which followed closely behind No. 41 at this point.

Seems like this would be an on-time (or almost) Train 41 “The Pelican” due to arrive in Radford at 7:13AM. This is definitely early morning summer light. The main through Vicker is almost perfectly in an East-West direction. The light in the photo is at a very low angle from the east and on the north side of the tracks which indicates early morning during the summer months.

  Jim,

Given the Southern head end cars, including a Southern RPO, I think No. 45 is likely. Also, No. 15 usually had six or so head end cars west of Roanoke and the train in this picture has only three. However, in early afternoon when No. 45 passed Vicker the sun would be on the camera side of the train which does not appear to be the case in this picture, unless obscured by a cloud.

  Other thoughts?

I don't think the train in the Photo at Vicker is No. 45. I vote for 15.

It is most certainly Vicker. Thanks to Bruce who supplied the date of 1951 for the installation.

The white structure Norris is referring is the chemical storage/water softener plant on the north side of the tracks.

    Look closely at this view:

This view looks west, and is in February, so the jungle is not grown up as of yet. Note the softener plant on the right, the brick pump house on the left, both visible in the ebay slide. Also of note on the left the embankment from the lead track to the old coal wharf.

Remember, that the old coal wharf had to remain in place until the new one was in service, it was built, by my calculations about 300 feet west of the original structure. As soon as the new place was safely in service, the old one would have been dismantled. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a photo with both in place, as it was probably only a period of a couple of weeks.

On the other side of the railroad overpass on the right side there appears to be a white "concrete" structure that appears to be shaped like the Vicker coaling tower. If it is then what is the structure the hopper cars are sitting on?

It’s still a puzzle, because in 1950 there was a large concrete coaling tower at Vicker which still stands.

      Jim -

That is a westbound train at Vicker, VA just west of Christiansburg.

Is this taken at Richlands VA? No location on description but all of the Southern equipment makes me think this is either headed to or coming from Bristol.
