Hello Jack,
In 1958, then N&W President Stuart Saunders began dieselizing the N&W. He leased E6’s and E7’s from the Atlantic Coast Line and Richmond, Fredericksburg, and Potomac to replace the J’s on all passenger trains across the system. These passenger diesels kept their owner’s paint scheme but received N&W lettering. As a result, the J’s were sent to work local freights and even a few time freights until their flue time ran out. A few J’s were brought back into passenger service for the Christmas traffic rush in December of 1958 and January of 1959, but were soon replaced again with new GP-9’s for passenger service. As a side note, cabeese, or cabin cars on any railroad, were rarely if ever seen on passenger trains as the conductor and rear brakemen could walk the train end to end unobstructed unlike in a freight train.
Sincerely,
Joe Congemi
