Jack:At one time, the NS had a branch that started at Mackeys andwent to Columbia. L. Q. Spruill was the conductor on the lastrun to Columbia,  The private road from Mackeys to the south shore  had been the Columbia Branch.  Apparently the name changed from Mackeys Ferry to Mackeys afterthe 5.05 mile trestle was completed.  The station at Mackeys was actuallyabout 1 mi. south of the Albemarle Sound.  For five days, I was the agentat Mackeys in 1961.  The largest commodity shipped was wood chipsfor Weyerhaeuser at Plymouth (about 10 miles to the south).  Outstandingrevenue ! About the Albemarle Sound trestle -- toward the center of the sound, piling could not be driven to a solid footing, so the pile driver wouldplace weight on the piling and push it to the desired height, then holdit in place until the sound bottom filled in.  Crossing the trestle ona Baldwin,  I was directed to sit in the middle seat and close my eyes. You could detect the engine hunting and listing from side-to-side.  Itmade me seasick.  At the time before the N&W/Southern merger, the state of North Carolinawas concerned that the old NS route would be eliminated.  After themerger, there was a run-through originating at Spencer, transferring tothe former N&W at Kenny (Lynchburg) and  terminating at Norfolk.                                                       Harry Bundy
