Roger,

According to N&W Steam in Color (McClure and Plant) p.103 this is May 4, 1957 near St. Paul, VA. Note fallen tree branch to right of trestle on bank.

Obviously the photos were not taken at the same time due to lack of smoke from second loco 563 on p.103. Perhaps this is the reverse move or more than one run by occurred. This would be one of several NRHS excursions during the 1957 Roanoke Convention of all Conventions!

Also, it is interesting to note that 5 and 6 used auxiliary tenders toward the end of steam operation as water stops were eliminated. See N&W in the Appalachians (King) p.101. I’ve seen other photos of this same operation. Just can’t place them now. This is the only use of auxiliary tenders in passenger service that I’m aware of. Corrections welcome if you know of others.

Subject: N&W E2a 578 double header in New York Times?

Interesting article and video about New York photograph collection and working with google to digitize.

If you watch the video, there is a image of N&W E2a 578 on a bridge with a double header (at 1:02). I wasn't able to find any 578 double header images in the NWHS online collection.

Anybody recognize this location or excursion? Was the image ever used by the New York Times?
