Yep, it branched off the N&W to the north into the Empire Colliers Coal
Company breaker and brickett works adjacent to Altoona Street (which still
exists). The Altoona Mine was along Altoona Branch on the backside of Tract
Mountain, working the base of Walker Mountain. The later Empire Mine was in
the same area, but to the east. Attached are two sections of topo maps that
show the locations of the mines in 1891 and 1940. Like the mines in
Montgomery County, these produced anthracite coal.
