Landon Gregory occasionally worked at Bedford as operator. He told me
he was on hand at the passenger station to sell tickets at train time, then
circulated to the freight station (on the original main line through Bedford)
to do clerical work. Maybe the signal was arranged so that it could be
manipulated from either station.
No doubt visibility played a part. On June 11, 1945, Extra 1233 East passed
the signal and rear-ended a local east of the overhead bridge in the background:
1 killed, 2 injured. ICC attributed the collision to overspeed. Harry Bundy
