John,

N&W Plan D661, dated Dec16, 1912, was used for the projections of the new Elkhorn Tunnel and revised track plan in 1947. The original drawing shows the old main line and the 1946/1947 penciled notations on the drawing indicate the old main line up Mill Creek is to be abandoned and retired. I would say this indicates some portions of the old main were left in place after the double tracking along with Bridge No. 853 over the Bluestone River and Bridge No. 855 over Mill Creek. The 1934 ICC report shows the Mill Creek Branch still listed in the track inventory as 0.63 mile long with a 0.85 mile siding. Plan D661 is NWHS HS-W10102.

Alex (or anyone else),

Did the original single-track main line up Mill Creek between Cooper and Ruth remain in place and in service between the time the Low-Grade Line was double tracked (1923) and construction of the new Elkhorn Tunnel (1948-1950)? I’ve seen photos showing that the original main line bridge over the Bluestone River was still in place around 1949. Whether it still had rail at that time I cannot tell.

The line to the right appears to be the Bluestone Low-Grade Line going into Cooper Tunnel and the line to the left is the original main line and siding going to Coopers, with the main line going to Ruth and the Elkhorn Tunnel and the siding continuing into the Bluestone Branch. The Bluestone Low-Grade Line was used as the westbound main and the original main line was used as the eastbound main until 1923 when the Low-grade line was double tracked to Ruth. That would place the photo just past Bluestone Junction.

This attached photo of the N&W electrification posted on Ebay raises
several questions such as (1) location? (2) why is there a whistle post
on the diverging line? (3) does the diverging line lead to a tunnel in
the distance? (4) what is the purpose of the guard rail adjacent to the
near running rail in the foreground of the diverging line? There
appears to be some mechanism on the opposite rail where one would expect
a derail to be located, but why have a guard rail opposite a derail?
