I want to second John's motion regarding an article or two about the Christmas mail rush. From what I can piece together this was a big  deal continuing into the 1960s.

Jacksonville Terminal Co. calculated that December 18th was the peak for Christmas
mail.  Until the late 1950s, N&W ran two sections of No. 26 -- not for mail, but 
mostly for the U.S. Navy.  Military personnel received a 50% discount on passenger
trains and around New Years, there was a surge of sailors returning to Norfolk.
