Jack
That was the 611 in September 1982. There is still a turntable at Lamberts Point. The crew tried to take the 611 to the table to turn her, but the lead tracks had been changed since the steam era, and she could not make the trip without climbing the rail. So, they attempted to turn her on the balloon track around the yards and ran into trouble there, so she could not be turned on that trip. We left Norfolk the next morning with two diesels. The 611 and tool car followed us out, in reverse, I think they were concerned in attempting to turn her on the wye at Poe, just east of Petersburg. So, if I am not mistaken, they backed the 611 all the way to Roanoke.
The balloon track was fixed by the next time we went to Norfolk.

I do remember reading in the Virginian Pilot (local Norfolk newspaper) that a Y had to be built in Norfolk so when the J Class arrived on a planned excursion, it could be turned around. Does this mean the Y was needed because there was no longer a turntable in the Lambert’s Point yard?

I know that sometimes I send out things that may not always be accurate but it's not intentional. I was not around in those days to see it with my own two eyes as the old timers say. I hope that if and when I don't have the entire story accurate in the future that folks will still kindly help straighten me out so others will know "The rest of the story" as Paul Harvey used to say. For those of you that are too young to know who Paul Harvey was just Google him! Ha! I am happy to see that my emails do generate some friendly discussions. They are a benefit to all of us railroad historians. Thanks to Ken Miller for this very interesting addition to the Forest, Va. turntable question.

I don’t have an exact date when it went away, but my Norfolk Division Timetable No. 8, into effect November 24, 1907 indicates a turntable there, my next Norfolk Division Timetable No. 14, effective June 6,1909 indicates a wye. This is just a touch over 18 months. Now, without further checking on specifics, that was the time frame when the railroad did a lot of double tracking and changed a lot of the grades on the Norfolk Division.

The next time I am at the archives, I will take a look at the drawing for Norfolk Division, it is cataloged, but has not been scanned thus far. It may shed a bit more light on the date of removal.

B is a separate building, seen in the second archival plan (Y-7589), not the same thing as the demolished depot - apparently still being used, since there are trucks parked beside it. C is the "Proposed Section Foreman's House" or another one shaped just like it in the exact same place, also shown on Plan Y-7589. The "Overhead Bridge" probably connected the road that comes down to the triangular intersection, just above and east of building B, to the matching vertical road to the south, just out of the frame at the bottom. Both surviving roads are in the same place relative to Building B as the bridge is on the plan. The switches and multiple tracks are still much like their early state, although I see no trace of the turntable any more.
