I understand flag and flag holders but this thing is taller between the flag holders and to the fireman’s side. Only one on a locomotive. I thought it might be some way to store flags but does not look large enough for that. And then theres that large flat cap . What say Jim Blackstock.

That would be a stanchion to hold signal flags when needed. A flag would be placed in each one (left & right) to show this was an extra train (white), second section following (green) or the train was backing (red).

On the pilot beam in these photos there is a stand which appears to have a flat plate on it . What is it?
