Depending on locality, railroads used other than stone ballast. NKP,
for instance, used slag from the steel mills. Slag's metallurgical content
had the ability to shunt signals. To reach Norfolk Terminal Station,
Virginian passenger trains operated over 1.3 miles of trackage rights
on the original Norfolk Southern. The ballast came from a local
industry -- oyster shells. (on 70# rail too). Harry Bundy
