Don't forget that intermediate signals could be triggered to drop to
a less favorable aspect than "CLEAR" when bond wires broke, a
slide detector fence activated the signal, or by a broken rail in the
intermediate or following block. 

In the former Wabash Manual Block Remote Control territory, there
was 115#  jointed rail.  From the end of one signaled siding to the
approach signal for the next siding, there was 12-14 miles without
intermediate signals.  When a bond wire would break, a train would
crawl at restricted speed 12 -14 miles hoping the next signal had
a more favorable aspect.                        Harry Bundy
