It's a track geometry car. It's been ballasted to the weight of a locomotive or loaded freight car to cause the track to deflect or behave in the way it would under said equipment. Sensors on the under carriage measure rail deflection and check for wear, alignment, and other imperfections.34 was originally N&W SD35 1530. NS has also built a similar 36 from a former N&W SD40.
