Station Location + another teaser

1) I concur with the reasons cited in this thread for the the station
ID as Montvale, about 16 miles east of Roanoke. Further, sheet 120,
Norfolk District track map shows random buildings north and away from
the station as appear in the photo, near Bridge 74 over the Goose Creek
Valley road (not in the photo). The pusher on the WB track, heading
for Blue Ridge and thence to Roanoke, likely connected to the pictured
mixed freight at the WB pusher siding at Irving, 4 miles further to the
east.

2) Now a question. In the mid-50s, so I understand, N&W built a middle
"fill track" with western end very near the eastern end of the Montvale
station siding, and running to just west of the Rte 691 grade
crossing--a little under 1.5 miles. The "Montvale Turn" out of Roanoke
delivered approx. 100 coal loads to the siding, with two successive
approx. 150-load consists picking up 50 loads each from the siding, each
train thus departing with consists of approx. 200 loads, up Price's
Grade normally with a Y and A at the head end, and a Y pushing (and
cutting off for the Irving WB pusher siding).

I have read of this tactic a number of times, but have never seen a
photo of action--static or with movement--on that middle "fill track."
Can anyone supply or refer me to such a photo, or to narrative on the
action?

Frank Gibson
