Railroaders occasionally use the word "man" as a synonym
for train or yard assignment. Example: Norfolk & Portsmouth
Belt Line operated a train from their Berkley Yard to the C&O
at Sewells Point (Norfolk). After receiving cars for C&O delivery
from all carriers on Norfolk Terminal, the Belt Line run would leave
Berkley about 9:30 PM and dump everything on the C&O
before the stroke of midnight. It was known as "the per diem
man". Per diem, of course, was the once-a-day rental railroads
paid for foreign line cars on their line at midnight. Harry Bundy
