Just to throw another consideration in the mix... I found the weather
for Lynchburg in 1957. They had a hot summer followed by a long cold
snap for a couple of weeks in Aug. That might have affected the
vegetation.

And it looks like there are still apples in the tree in the upper left
corner and leaves on the trees in the background. Apple time is
Sept/Oct if I recall correctly.
Just wish that photo was in color!!! ;-)
