The January-February-March eTAF was posted this morning. It has three pages
of information on the 2016 Convention centered on the Buchanan Branch and a
23-page short history of coal mining on the Buchanan/Levisa/Dismal Creek
Branches. It also lists various references which deal with how and when the
Buchanan/Levisa/Dismal Creek Branches and their extensions were constructed
and why the Wyatt Cut-off was constructed. It also slightly deals with the
boom and bust cycle of digging metallurgical coal used in steel making.

Because it is a short history, the article does not discuss how Japan
invested in a $24 million mine development effort in Buchanan County or the
$1 billion contract Romania signed for export coal hauled over the Wyatt
Cut-off, or why Jewell Smokeless built non-byproduct coke ovens or the joint
ventures between the producing coal companies and the consuming steel
companies. Nor does the article go into methane gas extraction.

There is more history on the Buchanan/Levisa/Dismal Creek Branches than most
of us realize and its development started 50 years after the opening of the
Pocahontas Coalfield in 1883.
