Dave,

CSX has only mothballed the segment between McClure, Va. and St. Paul, Va. NS still runs between St. Paul and Frisco Jct., via trackage rights. CSX still runs locals from Spartanburg north through Bostic, up, over the Loops and on to Kingsport, just north of Erwin.

Prior to the scaleback, the Clinchfield only had
two scheduled trains, Q696 and Q697, sister manifest trains btw Russell, KY and Hamlet, NC. Grain trains were extras and sporatic while coal trains, where the bulk of the traffic, though are way down.

CSX for whatever reason thinks it is smart to run coal trains with 6-8 crews now as opposed to 2. (Running to either Richmond, Va or to Atlanta to get to Brice, NC vs. running the Clinchfield.

Regards
Russ

My brother and sister-in-law live near Bostic, NC, and say they're still seeing a few trains come by - far fewer than before, but not zero.

CSX has locals that still run through Erwin. They have also indicated that the line will still be fully maintained, with the unstated thought that if traffic picks back up, they car open it pretty quickly. Also, if they decide to sell it to a regional, like the Buckingham RR between Clifton Forge and Richmond, everything will be in working order.

you never know if they have to reroute a train through there, I'm sure
it would be kept in a service state.
