Mike

I was there the Friday they emptied the yard and the Sunday following. That Friday they were frantically putting the last train together to head north as X803-16 to Shelby, KY. I caught it Saturday am in Dante. Sunday on the way home to Georgia, I caught Q697 headed south from Kingsport to Spartanburg, in Erwin. Sunday it was a complete ghost town. They even removed all of the rail borne MOW equipment, inliding the flanger and caboose that were long stationed there.

Sad, sight indeed, wasn't real well thought through though, given the circuitious re-routes the current coal trains have to take, via eith Richmond, Va or Atlanta, Ga to serve Duke Power. You are looking at 7-8 crews vs. 2 over the CRR....

Subject: Not NW but,

We visited Erwin, TN this afternoon knowing that a few weeks ago CSXT announced they would be closing their operations there but were unprepared for how swiftly everything has been moved off and out of the yards. No coal moves through anymore and it won't be long before the weeds take over. A real ghost location on the former once great Clinchfield. Also, the folly of building a flyover bridge (Rt 107) (to eliminate motorists having long waits when trains block the crossings leading to Main St.) is a stark reminder of the dying coal industry.

Attached photos illustrate the scene at this moment.
