Bruce,
That is called a run-around air hose. It was necessary to get air to the cars/engines behind the 2156 so that the air brakes would be operable on everything except the Y
It should come off after the engine is placed in it's final spot.

Will the bright red hose be removed from the pilot (or at least hidden) at some point, or is there some aversion to doing that? I noticed in one of the many photos of the Big Three that someone went to the time and trouble to Photoshop it out of his picture.
