Whats worse than the name of 611 is the crew having to wear hideous vests instead of bib overalls and period caps - -  Ron H

I throw my support behind Ed's comments. From my view she looks >95% as she would have in the 1950's. This situation reminds me of the great naval ships and subs in museums around the country. Supporters of the museums really wanted to have these vessels appear as they did in 1943 during the height of America's involvement in WWII, but of course it is impossible as many major changes happened during their service after WWII (just look at all the changes to the IOWA class ships such as addition of towers, radar masts, deletions of 5 inch guns, etc). We have to use our imagination a bit to picture the way they used to look during the war.
The same could have been true for 611, yet she looks remarkably similar to the way she did during her reign. I have to remind myself that alterations along the way could have been far, far worse. And of course, we are concerned about small changes that are easily fixed if there is a push in the future to get her back to 100% authenticity (which really should be the ultimate goal of the VMT I think, but that's just me). I would suggest that those who are really committed to such a cause join the VMT board and advocate from the inside rather than walk away! In the interim, let me just say it is really special to see her running again; there are so many things that could have stopped it along the way, I really do think it is a miracle. And thanks to all of the hard work by the thousands of supporters.

I agree with Ed and Bruce. While I’m not crazy about the name added, I was thinking the same about the NASCAR direction things could have taken. It’s much better to see it running again.   Maybe we can dream about getting 1218 and maybe even 2156 running again.  Phil Miller From: NW-Mailing-List [mailto:nw-mailing-list-bounces at nwhs.org] On Behalf Of NW Mailing List

So as far as I’m concerned, some little yellow letters under the cab window are not worth mentioning.  Be happy that they are running around on such a magnificent machine.

I'm with Ed and others on this -- instead of worrying about a small promotion of the city where magnificent steam power was built, we could be in CSX land, where "steam" is a bad word and even dead-in-tow movements aren't permitted (re: movement of the engine from Baltimore to Cumberland via flatbed truck). The VMT was also somewhat discrete with the placement of the lettering; it could have gone full-out NASCAR with emblems of all the major sponsors and supporters plastered on the tender sides. Those who want to waste their time being peeved are welcome to stay home, it will mean more space (on the train and trackside) for those who are more interested and excited about seeing the J running again. Bruce in Blacksburg
