Nate,

The CNW sublettering was used by Southern for their Carolina Northwestern that ran out of HIckory, NC.  I would say Chicago Northwestern had something to do with Southern changing to CRN as well.

Here is RS3 number 10 with the CNW lettering:


Look closely under the road number.
