Track Ballast

Richard:
The former NKP territory (Lake Region) used
slag for ballast.  It was a by-product of the
steel mills in Cleveland and Pittsburgh and
probably cheaper than buying stone ballast.  It
had a drawback however.  Slag had the ability
to transmit current and this resulted in signals
dropping to "stop" for no reason.
