Harry,
A little closer home the only Diverging Approach Diverging I am aware of in the Roanoke area, is at Diuguids Lane in Salem.
Just east of the road crossing (Diuguids Lane), is the crossover called VN. This connection was created to allow movement of former N&W coal trains through a crossover onto former Virginian Ry rails which lead into South Yard (former Vgn Roanoke Yard).
When the switches are lined properly, the signal displays "Diverging Approach Diverging". The train diverges off the former N&W through a crossover onto the former Virginian. The next signal (on the former Vgn, about 2 miles east) is just east of Union Street grade crossing in Salem called "Salem Connection". At this point the train which has diverged from the N&W to the Vgn at VN, is now diverging through the second crossover to a connection track which puts the train back on the N&W and into the former N&W yard.
Why divert a train only to cross it back over to the same track a couple of miles further east?
For much of the day, and evening and night, the Salem Shifter (local which works all the industry in the immediate area west of Roanoke) occupies the westbound main 2. Routing a train through the connection at VN and back to the N&W at Salem frees up a couple of miles of main 1 through Salem thus maintaining a "double track" situation through Salem. Westbound movements may move on the main 1 as eastbound movement can be made on the former Vgn, while the Salem Shifter continues to work on main 2.

Jim:Rule 283-B (Diverging Approach Diverging) was a late-comer to N&W'ssignal rules. So I was told, it had application on the Lake Region. Usuallyin rule classes, the instructor will give an example where such a signalis located. By my recollection, there was an example on Cleveland Terminal. But look at the INDICATION -- "Proceed through turnoutsor turnouts at prescribed speed preparing to take diverging routebeyond next signal AT PRESCRIBED SPEED". Note the emphasis. The interlocked crossovers may be good for 30 MPH, but beyondthe interlocking might be an interlocked junction good for only15 MPH. In looking at the Pokey Division track chart, the westboundhome signals near Depot Street also govern the junctionto the CV District. There is no interlocked signal wherethe CV District diverts from the PD District. Harry Bundy
