Flat Top was the original yard. Bluefield went under construction in 1887 about the same time that construction started on the Clinch Valley Line. Thomas Graham had expected that Graham would be the location of a major yard.

 

In July 1888 the N&W set out to organize a community and government for Bluefield. At the time West Virginia law required that into order to organize a community there had to be a minimum population of 100 people and include a territory of not less than one quarter of one square mile.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but wasn’t Flat Top the original yard constructed when the extension was first built?  Quite a while before Bluefield?

The ruling grade of 1.22% Flat Top to Bluefield
required mine runs to reduce eastbound 
tonnage by as much as 50%, with the overflow
relayed in turns or in trains not hauling the
maximum tonnage.


Flat Top was also the set-off point for west
loads originating on the Pocahontas or
Bluestone Branches.
