I would say that's probably correct. When we were touring the foundry a few years ago (Builders Plate Convention)
the gentleman former supervisor who was conducting the tour. Was telling us the electric furnace came used from
Inco Alloys in Huntington WV . One of the plate collectors in the group worked at Inco and verified this . Said Inco
people actually helped in setting it up in Roanoke. The C&O had a foundry in Huntington I remember when they tore
it down 1980s but it had long set idle. Never new anything about it.

Larry,
I've heard the claim that the N&W Roanoke Shops foundry was the only railroad-owned steel foundry in the USA, maybe in North America. On the other hand, many railroads had cast iron or brass foundries. For example, at the time of the merger with the N&W, the Southern Railway had a brass foundry in Lenore City, TN.

Yes it was owned and operated by the N&W. They cast just about anything
you can think of that they needed . I have a list of patterns for the foundry. List
some 38000 items. Bells , Whistles, couplers, wheels ,center plates, stoves ,signs
number plates, builders plates , Light poles, cylinders list just goes on forever.
Not certain but probably was the last railroad foundry in operation in the US.

Was the foundry near the east end shops owned by N&W and to what extent were castings made there. What parts other than wheels were made for steam locos ? Ron Hash
