Indeed the specialty products availability were part of the story, such things as lubricators, valve packings, air pumps, and a thousand other smaller items that were produced by outside companies, that simply went away with the end of steam across the US. 

The N&W did not want to go into the production business of that stuff, and upper management (read Stuart Saunders) wanted to dieselize "his" railroad, the quicker the better. So it would make him more a valuable asset (in some minds) so he could go and move to his dream job of running what was America's largest railroad, the Pennsylvania. Of course, we all know what Saunders did to the Pennsy.
