The tank containers only haul liquids, no gases. They haul everything from paint to fuel to chemicals. They are hazmat rated and plaqued for such. Typically they are in captive service. There is a 40' tank container that PPG, (IIRC) ships paint in, as it was a topic of conversation of on either Trainorders or Railcarphotos within the past two weeks.

If you are referring to the 20ft
international tanks where the tank is almost the width of the car,
then they are liquids. Gases are carried in much smaller diameter
tanks. One commodity that is carried is bulk wine from overseas.
These tanks are much more common in Europe than the US.
