pumps on K1

Mike,
The large flat thing you refer to on the left side of the K-1 was a feedwater heater made by the Worthington Corp. They made several types with this one being a BL type. It mixed the cold water from the tender with steam and or hot boiler water to raise the temperature of the water prior to entering the boiler. This increased the thermal efficiency and reduced the stress and temperature drop in the boiler that would happen if only the cold water were injected. Most modern engines had them as built and many older engines were equipped with them during later rebuilds and shop visits.
The two other pumps on the right side were just that.........Westinghouse cross-compound air pumps for the braking system. There were several companies and types of these pumps but the N&W "standard" was the Westinghouse cross-compound type. Most post 1937 N&W steamers used a pair of them or at least one. Some of the older and smaller engines like the E-2 Pacifics and some others used a pair of single phase pumps.
Hope that answers your question.

Do you know where to get an HO scale one? There are two smaller pumps (or whatever) on the engineers side.
What do they do?
Thank you,
Mike Shockley
