I looked at my 1897 Radford Division Timetable that Louis Newton got for me, and Arthur isn’t even listed; there’s nothing between Shawsville and Montgomery.

I’d like to see the CTC track display board from the tower there, if anybody has a photo of it. Christiansburg and Elliston would be awfully nice to see, too.

I'll bet you a dollar-against-a-donut that you found the original grading of the V&T, Benno. It was probably straight-lined at the time they did the double tracking in the 1890s.

EXCELLENT FIND on your part, Ben !

Bill Harman mentioned to me years ago that, at one time, there had been a "yardmaster" at Arthur. Seems implausible, but Bill certainly was familiar with the technical vocabulary and knew what that word meant. He even gave me the name of one fellow who had been the "yardmaster" there, and then moved on to other things. It's somewhere in my history notes. Bill also told me that Arthur was named for Arthur Siebold, but I've forgotten whether he was the land owner or someone who worked for the railroad.... that's also in my notes, somewhere.

I think there was a water tank at Arthur at one time, too, wasn't there?

1st Quarter 2014 eTAF is posted at www.nwhs.org. Its 14 pages contain, among
other things, the convention announcement, new Archives brochure, call for
director nominations for Board of Directors, and four fascinating winter
pictures from December 2013.

All,
I have a question I would like to pose to those who know.

There is an alternate alignment on the Christiansburg grade at Arthur.
I have walked this grade, and it is a very old grade. My question
is, is this the remains of an old shoofly track, or is it the original
alignment?

I don't see where a shoofly track would have ever been necessary, as
the cut it bypasses isn't really that high in the first place, but it
is long. But, I could be wrong. The main reason I question it is
because the old grade is built very substantial in my opinion, and
doesn't look like something temporary the way the Shawsville shoofly
grade does.

If it is the original alignment, then when was the new alignment built?

I've attached a screenshot of Google Earth showing it. Keep in mind,
this is Arthur, not Shawsville.

Thanks,
Ben Blevins
