2050 is inside out of the weather. Don't let exterior rust fool you. Thats all fixable. Thats from me who helped 765 on its first restoration work.
Things like the 2156 crack may be of more concern, again fixable.
No restoration work isnt going to be done without a top down inspection/repair, but is all doable/possible, it runs more, whats the motivation and practicality to do so.
Right now the IRM steam crew has 1630 2-10-0 practically ready for a 2014 steaming season then they move to the shay which has had off/on work.
IRM has a long line of steamers outside, maybe none will see operation/restoration (but need to get indoors as their barn constructions continue theres plenty of outside equipment to get out of the weather protection, one of the key issues there)
1630 had a firebox issue but they got it fixed, so they have the talent there. Look for it running possibly regularly in 2014.

I just did a Google Search on N&W 2050. I looked at the images. Is the entire locomotive rusted below the walkways? It looks like its in bad shape. Tell me again what it is they do at the IRM? Take care of the engines? NO.
  Very disappointed.

Who paints the rods? Just about every locomotive on display that's not in operation. Every locomotive
at VMT has painted rods including the 611 only exception would be 1218 which they clear coated
and is now just rust for the most part. I saw 2156 last year looked OK by me.

Sometimes I think its not so good to put everything in the same game.
St Louis has been a good caretaker of the 2156 probably a lot better
than VMT would have done. Of course it would be nice two see all three
together. But if the ship sinks you lose it all

As a Virginia transplant to Illinois and N&W Historical Society member, I want to let you know I would hate for the Illinois Railway Museum to lose the 2050 and for the National Transportation Museum in St Louis to lose the 2156. There are N&W fans worldwide and we like having a small piece of its history in easy driving distance. That said, I do understand the desire to bring the girls home to Roanoke. And seeing them under steam would be glorious...since I have missed everything since then, steam wise.
Something neat happened at IRM--I was videotaping a kid about 5 years old running around being a nuisance...(to everyone but me)...he climbed on the nose of 2050 and was yanking the bell cord...I muttered to myself, That's N&W brass, boy, and you just go to town and let me record. His parents have no idea that they were the ones being a nuisance...they took him off the locomotive!
