"The times they are 'a changin'".
Well, actually, already changed. I heard them called motors for years on the yard. But Jimmy is right, in that they were most commonly referred to as units. Then I worked with one conductor who almost always called them .....what else?....."Diesels".

You are right Richard. Back when I was in freight, many engineers, one in particular named Charlie Linkous always referred to the consist as motors.
