That day was also my last ride with 611. I was a car host in NS 29, which
was near the front. I had been assigned to host the Roanoke Chapter's 1829
open window car, but it didn't survive the accident in Lynchburg, so I
wound up in one of the NS cars instead. I still had a great time in some
ways, and in other ways I was so beside myself because the news of 611's
impending retirement had been announced the Wednesday before. We tried to
have a good time, but it was kind of like hearing an old friend was
terminally ill.
I'm sure all you folks out there have a similar story. It is GREAT to have
the hope that 611 will once again pound the high iron. My kids are also
very excited about it!
Thanks for sharing the photo Mike!
