Superior vs inferior routes

Superior probably isn't the word for it, but N&W had many
miles of double track signaled for one direction only --
Mile Post N-8 to Disputanta comes to mind. As long as
trains operated west on the westbound and east on the
eastbound - no problem. But when it came to operating
west on the eastbound or east on the westbound, there
was no signal protection for the detouring movement.
This required that the dispatcher issue a "right of track"
order that read something like:
"No. 86 Eng 1218 has right over trains on westward
main track Suffolk to Juniper".
There were instances when MofW crews would be
renewing rail on one main line which was out of service.
Eastbound trains would be detoured on the westbound
main track and vice versa. N&W required that a supervisor
be at each end of the detour to block trains.
