Bridge at Narrows, VA

-. The Narrows bridge was built to move trains back to the VGN.

 Sometime, consider the results had the connection from
the N&W to the former VGN been at  Belspring rather than
Narrows. 

 Incidentally, there was an interesting facility just east of the New River
crossing along U.S. 460 - a weigh-in-motion scale and sprayer.   Folks
along the right-of-way had complained about coal dust blowing off
eastbound trains and by spraying the loads, the dust was reduced.
For destinations other than Lamberts Point, coal was weighed as the
train passed, eliminating the need to scale at Roanoke.  Railroaders
coined a term for the facility -- "the weigh and spray". Harry Bundy
